Hello Mystical Mugwort…

To me, she’s like the cheeky cackling elder in the circle. She’s seen it all, holds deep wisdom, but isn’t missing the point that life doesn’t amount to much if you aren’t having some fun along the way. She’ll be the wise woman who walks beside you as you journey into other realms, helping you as you go to collect the wisdom your being seeks.

Mugwort has a long history across various cultures for her psycho-spiritual properties of:

Dreamwork: In tincture form, Mugwort can be used prior to bedtime to stimulate vivid and lucid dreams, or to help recall and enhance dreaming. You could also sleep with some of the fresh or dried herb under your pillow or on your bedside table to achieve the same effect.

Astral Travel, Psychic Abilities, Meditation/ Altered States: Mugwort can aid in astral projection or journeying during meditation, and enhancing intuitive and psychic abilities. Her power certainly is in facilitating a connection with other realms and dimensions.

Spiritual Cleansing: Burning dried mugwort as incense or smoke cleansing with mugwort smoke is thought to purify, cleanse and protect the energy of a space or person. A common example of this is the burning of ‘Moxa’ (moxibustion) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is dired mugwort. The practice is used to stimulate the flow of blood and Chi/Qi.

Top Physical Health Indications:

Irregular Menstrual Cycle/ Absent Cycle (Oligo/Amenorrhoea):

These deep feminine actions pertaining to intuition and the assimilation of wisdom perhaps makes no surprise that physically her work in the body is often focused on the female cycle. Her best strength here is when there is an excess of male hormones (known as androgens/testosterone), and when the cycle is slow, stagnant, cold, crampy, clotting and irregular. She works to reduce any androgen excess, and in bringing warmth and stimulation to the female reproductive tract she helps to regulate the cycle and hence bleed.

Digestive System:

Being also that she is pungent and bitter, Mugwort is a fantastic remedy for stimulating and supporting a cold and damp digestive system that is sluggish, distended, crampy, bloated, not digesting food or fats sufficiently, and could use some ‘warming up’. Mugwort is part of the wormwood family which is well known for its bitter and anti-microbial/ worming properties. Whilst not as strong as other wormwood species, Mugwort may still offer benefit for states of dysbiosis, or imbalance in the intestinal microbiome.

Nervous System:

Mugwort has gentle nervine properties which help to calm stress and tension within the nervous system. As she is a relaxant to the nervous system, this is a great remedy for complaints where nervous tension is at the root - especially if related to digestion or menstruation!

Contraindications & Medicine Interactions:

  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding - avoid, due to potential to stimulate menstrual bleed and affect pregnancy and hormonal balance.

  • Allergy - individuals with allergies to plants in the Asteraceae family, such as ragweed, marigold, and chamomile, may also experience allergic reactions to mugwort - monitor.
