I have such a revered and meandering relationship with Tulsi.

She has offered herself for me to make medicine with so many times. So many times I have taken cuttings of her leaves, and sat as I’ve stripped the flowers, younger green stems and flowers from the woodier stalks, the scent intoxicatingly heavy, her oils staining my fingertips.

I was briefly trained on this wonderful herb in my uni studies but never really ended up reaching for her much in practice.

Once I commenced the re-rooting and grounding my herbal studies into more Earth-centric traditions like plant spirit communication and medicine making, she was one of the first to crop up and help show me the way.

It all started when, without really knowing what I was exactly signing up for, I enrolled myself into a 4 week herbal alchemy and spagyric making course in Byron in 2019. It was a full day workshop held each Thursday for 4 weeks, making a different type of herbal extract each week, and doing lots of meditations to meet and ask questions of the herb being explored. You didn’t get told the herb selected for each round of the course until you arrived, and, breathless and late driving down from Brisbane, I found out on that first Thursday that Tulsi was herb we were journeying with for this round.

Enter a most benevolent, gracious, generous plant, who continually showered us in her insights and blessings for the time we worked with her, and since.

One of the participants was a beautiful french woman, and she hosted us at her house for several of the weeks. At the end of the course she gifted us each with a Tulsi cutting, which I went home to plant in my garden. The bush still thrives to this day, and was a joy to watch the bees rush and fawn all over her, devouring the pollen from her beautiful delicate leaves. I took a cutting of this plant and bought it up with me to plant here on the Sunshine Coast now we’ve moved, and she’s prospered into a huge unruly bush here too (as these generous and benevolent plants often do - the blessings are un-ending and sometimes requiring pruning!).

The Herbal Alchemy course i did with tulsi, making an essential oil, tincture and ash of her.

Also known as Holy Basil, Tulsi is considered “the incomparable one” and “Queen of the Herbs” in Ayurvedic tradition, revered as a sacred, heart-opening herb. Her violet flowers are connected with the crown chakra, supporting spiritual alignment, soul reconnection, and clarity of perception. Tulsi has a unique ability to simultaneously uplift and calm, she cuts through foggy thinking and stagnant emotional energy, while relaxing mental tension and opening the heart to stillness and devotion.

This dear herb shines in times of stress, overwhelm, low mood, spiritual disconnection, or mental fatigue. As an adaptogen, nervine relaxant, and nootropic, Tulsi supports you to meet the bus demands of modern life, but in a calmer, grounded and resilient way, with clarity, calm and focus.

It is an adaptogen, helping the body cope better with stress, with an affinity for the spirit and mental realms, so great for busy, anxious minds and a weary soul.

Tulsi is a true ally for those who feel so tired, lost, or on the edge of burnout. She uplifts the spirit, improves focus, soothes nervous agitation, balances blood sugar, and gently stimulates circulation.

She has so many varied uses, you could almost see her as a panacea, and a herb raining her blessings and gifts down on almost all body systems
